Response to the Current Political Situation

At a time when Kosovo, like the rest of the world, is facing the fight against the COVID-19 virus, Kosovo’s politicians must act responsibly and prioritize the public interest, public health, and the emergency situation rather than engaging in a power struggle. Considering that Kosovo has a weak healthcare system and limited resources to combat this pandemic, the current political situation only worsens this state of affairs.

The Institute for Social Policies “Musine Kokalari” considers that insisting on voting for the motion of no confidence today, at such a sensitive time both globally and in our country, carries irresponsibility and poses a high risk primarily to public health, but also to the integrity, credibility, and continuity of public institutions.

The institutional leaders (the President and the Prime Minister), as well as the coalition partners (the Vetëvendosje Movement – VV and the Democratic League of Kosovo), are the main parties responsible for causing the political and institutional crisis in the Republic of Kosovo.

Our institute strongly condemns the behavior of the coalition partners during these critical moments. Our country cannot afford to waste time and energy dealing with the lack of internal political cohesion within the government at this time.

Any potential changes in the government would mean a disruption of the continuity of the mechanisms established by the current government, specifically the Ministry of Health and all other relevant institutions, for identifying and testing suspected cases, treating the sick, and monitoring the evolving situation. The time lost dealing with political party interests could prove fatal for Kosovo.

The Republic of Kosovo, now more than ever, needs a progressive government, social policies, democratic capacities, and above all, a government that prioritizes its citizens.
