Political Parties in Kosovo Far from Implementing the Gender Equality Standard

Even in these elections, equal gender representation on candidate lists for deputies from political parties in Kosovo remains only at the level of aspiration. The lists submitted on Saturday evening show that most political parties have ensured compliance only with the minimal threshold set strictly by the General Elections Law, rather than fully implementing Law No. 05/L-020 on Gender Equality.

For the Institute for Social Policies “Musine Kokalari,” the failure to respect legislation that promotes gender equality indicates that political parties—regardless of which one gains the mandate to lead the country—will not place women equally in governance. This practice also reflects the level of seriousness of the promises made in the last legislature regarding the implementation of gender equality in all proposals and public functions in Kosovo.

The table below shows the total number of candidates, the proposed number of men and women, and the representation of both genders expressed in percentages.

Political entityTotal number of candidatesMENWOMAN%
LVV 110694137%
PDK110773330%
LDK110773330%

The table has been compiled based on announcements on social media by political parties and does not include other political parties that have not published their lists.

In these elections, the Institute for Social Policies will closely monitor the electoral process. We will focus on the economic, social, and health proposals that political parties present in their programs.
