The environment as a space for building citizenship and regional cooperation

The Director of the Board of the Institute for Social Policies “Musine Kokalari”, Belgzim Kamberi, participated in Paris in the panel of the Public Tribune on the topic: “New Environmental and Civic Voices in the Balkans”.

Presenting the research findings of the “Musine Kokalari” Institute for Social Policies on hydropower plants and specific local cases—such as the activism of NGOs and environmental activists regarding hydropower projects in the Deçan area, or the protests in Shtërpcë and Gorazhdec—Belgzim Kamberi also raised, among other issues, the question of the environment as a new space for building citizenship and regional cooperation in the interest of the public good, as well as the need to implement environmental justice in the near future.

The panel also included Ms. Natalija Simović from Ne davimo Beograd (Serbia) and Mr. Mileta Radovanović, Secretary General of the Civic Movement URA (Montenegro).

In addition to the public tribune, the panelists held a conference with journalists from prestigious French media outlets on environmental issues in the Balkans, a discussion with Mr. Sébastien Gricourt, Co-Director for the Balkans at the Jean Jaurès Foundation, as well as a working lunch with representatives of the French Green Party – Europe Écologie-Les Verts.

They were also received in a meeting by officials from the Directorate for the Balkans at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs – France Diplomatie.

The organization of this visit was made possible and supported by Le Courrier des Balkans and the Heinrich Böll Foundation office in Paris, France.
