The Musine Kokalari Institute for Social Policy in collaboration with the New Social Initiative \u2013 NSI has presented the findings of a joint research on the attitudes and perspectives of the Serbian community in Kosovo. The focus of the research was to understand the needs, interests and current state of service provision.<\/p>\n\n
The conference was enriched by the presence of Carin Lobbezoo, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Kosovo, who added value to the discussions and we are deeply honored by her contribution.<\/p>\n\n
Exploring community needs: Our research aims to shed light on the specific needs and interests of the Serbian community in Kosovo.<\/p>\n\n
Service Delivery: Assessing current services available and identifying gaps that need to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n
Community Attitudes and Perspectives: Gaining a deeper understanding of how the Serbian community views their current situation and future perspectives.<\/p>\n\n
Our project aims to comprehensively analyze the views and feelings of the Serbian community in Kosovo using quantitative research methods. The main goal is to collect and assess their perspectives on a range of issues that are important to them and relevant to the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo. Below, we present some of the main findings from our report:<\/p>\n\n
Top Daily Concerns: The community’s top three daily concerns are overall security\/stability (51%), political freedom (43%), and employment\/economic conditions (40%), indicating pressing issues for residents.<\/p>\n\n
Corruption: This emerges as the most important challenge (42%) regarding political freedom and democracy, with concerns about political interference from both the Kosovo and Serbian governments.<\/p>\n\n
Urban and rural differences: There are significant differences between urban and rural areas in perceived challenges. For example, corruption is more prevalent in rural areas (49%) compared to urban areas (31%), while urban areas prioritize lack of adequate political representation compared to rural areas (41% vs. 30%).<\/p>\n\n
Perceptions of government efforts: Respondents express mixed perceptions regarding government efforts towards minority groups. There is substantial agreement that dialogue and understanding are widely promoted (61%), but there are notable concerns regarding barriers to access to services (68%) and underrepresentation in the media (66%).<\/p>\n\n
Main stakeholders: The Serbian Orthodox Church emerges as the main actor for dialogue about the needs of the Serbian community (58%), followed by Serbian political parties from Kosovo and Serbia (46-44%).<\/p>\n\n
Regional Differences in Mediator Preferences: Preferences for dialogue mediators vary across regions. Urban respondents favor other Kosovo political parties (31%), while respondents in rural areas prioritize political parties in Serbia (59%).<\/p>\n\n
This conference represents an important step forward in our ongoing efforts to understand and address the needs of the Serbian community in Kosovo. We are committed to continuing this important work and look forward to sharing more insights with you in the near future.<\/p>\n\n
