This was one of the main conclusions of the workshop “Youth and Building Intercommunity Trust,” organized in Štrpce by the Musine Kokalari Institute for Social Policy, with the participation of young people from the Serbian community. The workshop was organized and moderated by Senad Šabović and Fisnik Rexhepi.

During the workshop, participants discussed identity, intercommunity relations, socio-economic challenges, and opportunities for the development of the Municipality of Štrpce. Through interactive discussions, they reflected on the factors that shape their identities, emphasizing the importance of community, religion, education, and their connection to the place where they live.

An important part of the discussions focused on interethnic relations. Participants assessed that politics and narratives inherited from older generations continue to influence perceptions between communities. The need for more communication, cooperation, and direct contact among young people was strongly emphasized.

Unemployment and the lack of economic prospects were identified as the main challenges facing young people in Štrpce. Participants expressed concern about the limited number of jobs in the private sector and the influence of family or political connections in the hiring process, calling for greater meritocracy and stronger efforts to combat corruption. In their view, these factors contribute directly to youth migration.

However, the discussions also highlighted concrete development potential. Participants identified agriculture, particularly raspberry cultivation, as one of the sectors with the greatest economic potential for the area. They also mentioned economic cooperation between communities in the trade and processing of agricultural products, as well as the opportunities offered by Sharr Mountain, mountain tourism, and mushroom harvesting.

As part of the group work, participants proposed concrete initiatives to strengthen cooperation and local development. One group suggested establishing an association of women from different communities, while the other proposed promoting Sharr Mountain through tourism activities, camps, nature hikes, and sports events that could attract visitors and create new economic opportunities.

Participants agreed that economic development, the creation of opportunities for young people, and cooperation between communities are key elements for the future of Štrpce. The main message of the workshop was that, despite the challenges, there is real potential for development through agriculture, tourism, and local initiatives that promote cooperation and social cohesion.

This activity was implemented within the framework of the project “Fostering Political Dialogue on Interethnic and Social Cohesion”, with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Agriculture, tourism, and community initiatives were identified as some of the most promising opportunities for the economic development of Štrpce.
