Expressing our most sincere condolences to the family of Agon Zejnullahu and all his relatives, the Musine Kokalari Institute for Social Policy urgently demands a professional and transparent investigation, as well as institutional accountability.
This tragic event cannot end only with the suspension and arrest of police officers. It cannot be defined only as a disciplinary and criminal matter. The Lipjan tragedy should not be treated as an isolated case. It is both a reflection and a signal of a disturbing symptom of state policing, and as a product of the emboldening of the mentality of legitimizing violence in the name of public safety and, on the other hand, of a security apparatus that tends to be used, more and more, with arbitrary methods, without effective civilian control and without full public transparency.
We invite the responsible institutions of the Republic of Kosovo to take decisions and actions as soon as possible to keep the police at the service of the citizen, public democracy and especially human dignity, as a fundamental link in the social contract between the individual and the state.
Therefore, the Musine Kokalari Institute for Social Policy urgently requests:
– A full, independent and transparent investigation
– Institutional accountability
Without justice for Agon Zejnullahu, there can be no social peace and public security.
